Reuse and creativity? Artists who create works of art from waste

Have you ever heard of Trash Art? This artistic movement, like the avant-garde movements that preceded it, expresses and seeks to describe in an authentic and original way the changes in society and the reality we live in and around us. That is why, when faced with issues such as pollution, environmental protection, and climate change, Trash Art questions the reuse and creative use of waste materials. Artists in this movement create works of art from waste , transforming it into eco-sustainable materials and placing environmental protection at the center of their artistic work.

Art and waste: a dialogue that began in the 20th century

When did the first artists start looking at waste as a material for their creations? This dialogue began in the early 20th century, through gestures that were irreverent towards those artistic movements that based their research on the concept of beauty as handed down from classical times. The intervention of figures such as Marcel Duchamp, Alberto Burri, and Piero Manzoni was fundamental: these artists used everyday objects in their works, giving them a new lease of life. Then, in 1960, 'New Realism' was born, a movement that began with the critic P. Restany. The new realists, who included painters and sculptors, proposed a new reality using the materials that make up our world, such as waste and rubbish.

At the heart of this art form was a critique of a consumerist society that, after industrialization, contributed even more to the waste of resources. Klein, Tinguely, Christo, Cesar, Spoerri, and Rotella are just some of the exponents of this movement, which placed the artist's activity at the center of their work. In this sense, it was the latter that gave meaning to the work: the objects that were used were used and consumed, but then reassembled and reinterpreted on the basis of the artist's project, which symbolically destroyed old values to create new ones.

What is Trash Art? The art of recycling and works of art made from waste

Today, environmental and ecological awareness is at the heart of certain artistic movements, such as Trash Art or Waste Art . While Duchamp was the protagonist of a veritable revolution, today assembling waste using canvases, walls, or other tools is the process that leads artists to take a stand on the environment, to raise awareness and protect the planet. The goal, in fact, is to use waste itself as an eco-sustainable material to spread greater awareness against waste, involving and sparking important reflection on the use of our resources and our daily habits.

Whether they are studio works or graffiti in large cities, Trash Art works emphasize how activism and environmental awareness necessarily requirethe creative energy of art.

Trash Art artists: Vik Muniz, John Dahlsen, and Bordalo II

Graffiti and works that highlight how "waste material" puts sustainability at the center art, a new means of communicating values and messages. Vik Muniz is a Brazilian artist who uses his art to give voice to the lives that revolve around Jardim Granacho in Rio de Janeiro, one of the largest landfills in the world. In "Catadores," the protagonists are the garbage collectors themselves, whom the artist portrays using the very waste they have recovered.

Plastic, pieces of buoys, nets, and straps are the waste returned by the sea with which John Dahlsen creates abstract collages that recall natural landscapes. This artist's work questions the boundaries between what is natural and what is man-made, forcing us to redefine everyday objects and artistic ones.

Finally, among the Trash Art artists is the Portuguese Bordalo II: he has placed at the center of his work a creative recycling process that he carries out directly near the wall chosen for the work. The objects used are collected from the street and assembled into striking 3D murals, thus becoming eco-sustainable materials. The artist focuses on a variety of subjects, including endangered animals, created using the very materials that contribute to the destruction of their natural habitats.

Now that you know about Trash Art, why not take inspiration from it and use what we usually throw away to paint and experiment with waste? After all, what is art if not a way to unleash your creativity and make room for new ideas? Sustainability and recycling are the keywords you can use to get to work and create your own works of art from waste.
