L’autunno è arrivato in Filanda

Autumn has arrived in Filanda

Logbook, October, Laura here.
The sky has changed, and so have the colors of Filanda.
The leaves are turning brown and becoming crispier. In the morning, we arrive at the studio wearing a couple of extra layers of clothing, and we often work with the lights on even at times when the sun should be enough.

Here at Filanda, everything continues as usual, and the new collection is now underway. We often imagine Eva, our soft checked cotton flannel shirt, sharing the scene with comfortable shoes and a warm hat. In the image that springs from our imagination, we never fail to include a steaming cup of tea and a book with a dog-eared page.

How a new collection is born

We love autumn and it's incredible to think how quickly it has arrived. Even though we don't follow the standard fashion calendar, we always work ahead of schedule to create our collections: in the midst of presenting the summer collection, we were already immersed in imagining this autumn's collection.
Bringing a new collection to life is a long process, compressed into a very tight timeframe. A series of phases follow one another and make our moods change: excitement, curiosity, and expectation alternate with discouragement and veiled panic attacks, but that's the beauty of the game, what keeps us alive and nourishes us.
Every new collection starts with the most beautiful phase: the search for inspiration.

Phase 1: inspiration is there, you just have to find it

Trade shows are crucial: the entire fashion industry comes together to meet suppliers and discover trends. For us, these are solemn occasions, during which I devote myself mainly to studying the selection, proposals, and samples of a potential supplier, while Paolo negotiates commercial agreements.

During the research phase, I can enjoy the luxury of observing the latest trends. I take everything I like and simply absorb it. Then I start drawing, transferring my ideas onto paper.

Phase 2: planning, calculating, defining, but also arguing

It is essential to do a little planning of the number of garments and colors we want to offer. The moment of choice inevitably arrives, when my creativity and Paolo's numerical practicality often clash without a fight. As he says, there must be something new, but also a safe anchor to minimize risks. It's a balancing act. It's the most difficult part, and often we can't avoid a few arguments, as happens in all companies that have a style department and a sales department: worlds with very different spirits that must find a harmonious agreement. Without that agreement, the collection cannot be created.

Phase 3: produce, run, shoot

The production phase takes place outside the atelier, but not very far away, as the workshops we use are in Veneto. Handing over the work to those who will create the garment is certainly a delicate phase, which we follow step by step to avoid any tragic surprises. Ready.
Usually, the garments arrive just in time for the shoot, when everything goes smoothly, at least!
The days leading up to the shoot are a bit of a final rush, with stress levels peaking. If something goes wrong, as they say, the show must go on, and the photos must be taken one way or another.

We like our shots to have an atmosphere suspended between the aesthetics of design lines and the dusty vibrations of the productive spirit, and this is the mood we look for every time in the location that will host us for the shoot.

Phase 4: when the collection takes flight

The moment arrives when everything is done and all that remains is to present the new collection to the world. We pause for a moment and look back to retrace the steps one by one. Between research, trials, and inspiration, interspersed with a few healthy surprises, we have once again found a way to express ourselves. Each collection is a small piece that makes up the portrait of who we are, the result of a thought process that evolves while remaining true to its roots: a solid identity, but one that is always evolving.
